Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Make It Simple, Make It Yours

Cybersecurity can feel too complex and too expensive for small business owners. Cloud and outsourced IT services make big promises about protection, but security is a shared responsibility, and as the owner you are ultimately accountable for keeping the business safe and secure.

This isn’t meant to scare anyone off. Accepting that responsibility is an important first step. Most owners juggle unknowns and wear multiple hats, with thin resources and little time for something as abstract as “security.”

Let’s Do This!!

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and I will be launching my Cyber Series for Small Businesses detailing how you can lay the foundation for a strong approach to cybersecurity for your business.  Each week, I will release a new blog showing how protecting your business does not have to be complicated, time-consuming, or expensive if it is done with intention and a thoughtful plan. I hope that I can guide you through this journey with simple and affordable steps to get you started on the right path.

This is NOT About Technology

To explain a bit more, this blog series is not about technology or security tools. Your cloud and IT service providers likely have that covered for you. This series is more about how to prepare your company to become more efficient and effective in how you approach cybersecurity from a resource and business view.

Starting October 1st and continuing every Wednesday through the end of the month, I will be posting on specific topics that help lay the foundation for a strong approach to security for your business.

  • October 1: Culture - When everyone is on the same page, good security becomes attainable. Our first blog talks about how to build the right culture to empower your business.

  • October 8: Risk – Protecting your business is all about understanding risk. In this blog I will talk about ways to spot your biggest blind spots, no consultant required.

  • October 15: Preparation – Being ready is essential to minimizing the impact of a security event, and in this blog, I will give you insights into how you can best prepare for when something goes wrong.

  • October 22: Guardrails – As your business grows, ensuring your staff understands their roles and responsibilities helps build accountability. In this blog I discuss the importance of structure and policies in your foundational approach to security.

  • October 31: Wrap-Up – We wrap us the series with a summary of how to put this all together, including a simple checklist to lock in progress and keep momentum going.
